Take over an old keeper's clockwork farm and bring it back machine by machine, until it runs itself like a music box.
You arrive in the valley town of Thistlewick to take over the old keeper's clockwork farm. The works stand rusted around one preserving crock still bubbling on its last beans. Bring them back machine by machine: within minutes an arm you restored is carrying pickles to the shipping crate, a gleaner picks the field you planted, and the keeper's water wheel turns the grist mill by the river.
Every machine tells you what it is doing and why it stopped, so a stuck line is a puzzle you can solve instead of a mystery. The town is your customer: fill its orders, rank up with each business, and bring back the mill, the waterworks, the street lamps, the tram and the clock.
Hand farming is still here whenever you want it, and the morning summary names yesterday's biggest bottleneck.
2.1, "Overseas", opens the Harbor: late in the game a merchant ship, the Copper Gull, calls at the beach pier with a manifest from a port across the sea, asking for goods in amounts only a factory can make, like 300 iron bars or 2,000 glass. Fill it and climb six ranks, from Dockhand to Merchant Prince.
