Overgrowth 0.9: Wild Places, plus quests and rivers

Three playtest games got big updates today.

Overgrowth 0.9 and 0.9.1

Play it here.

0.9, Wild Places, folds in everything from the 0.8 preview (Spitters, Burrowers, the Glowcap Lantern, Memories, dark nights) and adds a second region.

  • The drowned grove lies about 200 m from the Heartwood: forest gone to black water, mangroves on arching roots, reed beds and drowned trees, with thick grey-green fog.
  • New forage: cut reeds, catch bog eels in the shallows, and pick bog iron out of the mud. Smoked Eel heals 75, and one bog iron makes five Iron Shot for the slingshot.
  • The Sunken Shrine at its heart holds a jade figurine and rare parts.
  • A sixth rift tears open in the grove from night 4, and its Blight wade in out of the water.

0.9.1, Steady Ground, is a performance and onboarding patch:

  • The game caps at 60 fps by default and picks Low, Medium or High to fit your graphics card the first time you play.
  • Fewer stutters, and depth on the whole forest floor.
  • Hover a recipe to see exactly what you're missing and where to find it. The satchel glows when you can craft something.

Full notes are in the changelog.

Verdant Relay: Stage 9

Play it here.

  • Quests read as quests: a quest card at the start of each day, a tracker, and a glowing arrow with the distance.
  • Skillful day combat: roll or deflect enemy attacks, and punish openings for 1.5× damage. Getting hit cancels your combo.
  • Wooden bridges cross the rivers, by day and on the Ford night map.
  • Build anywhere at night: towers go on any free tile, not just pads.
Verdant Relay: the new quest tracker and arrow

Pixel RTS: rivers

Play it here.

  • On Pangaea and Lakes maps, a river now splits the players into two sides, crossed by two stone bridges. Ships pass underneath.
  • Idle Builders join unfinished buildings on their own.
  • Tanks are slower, the Factory needs a finished Barracks first, and the game explains oil right where you need it.
